Compressors don't need to have sidechaining to compress audio as we have been using ProC with no sidechaining up until this recent update. So yes compressors do work without this feature. cheers.

What I meant is that they always have an internal sidechain (for the control-signal) because that is how compressors (and other dynamic processors) work after all.

I think the OP was wondering if the sidechain in D.CAM EnvShaper was like the sidechain in Fabfilters plugins that was just updated so that we could use them to sidechain from another track. The fact is that a signal is split from an input and one sent to the VGA and the other to the sidechain to a circuit controlled by the signal level applies the specified gain to the amplifier stage. This being a feed forward design whereas a feedback design takes its signal feeding the control circuit after the amplifier. If anyone is interested that is the internal sidechain workings of a compressor and it is that sidechain circuit that we tap into when we insert a signal path from another sound source or input device. cheers.
