crashing on ipad mini

Post by tzigularov » Sat Jul 06, 2013 12:44 pm

Hello,

I just purchased Auria to use with iPad mini and it continuously crashes no matter what I do.
I am using iPad Mini with Apogee Jam.
Here are the steps I take:

1. Connect headphones and Jam to iPad Mini
2. Open Auria
3. Start new project at 48000
4. Add new track
5. Then Auria either crashes immediately or after I arm the track.

Once it crashes it continuously crashes each next time I try to open it.
I tried all the tips I saw in this forum, like closing all background apps, reinstalling Auria, and the issue occurs again every time.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Zahari

To follow up on this issue, Auria starts working fine as soon as I unplug Apogee Jam. I tried plugging the headphones first then Jam, before and after Auria is opened and the issue continues. As soon as Jam is plugged in Auria crashes.
I hope there is a simple fix that I am overlooking.

Thanks,

Zahari

Which iOS version are you using? Also, are you using the latest version of Auria? You can check the version number in Auria's settings page.

Have you tried plugging in your headphones first, before you plug in the Jam, or the other way around. In iOS6, there's a bug in CoreAudio that will crash your iPad if you plug in your headphones after you plug in a USB audio interface (headphones should be plugged in beforehand).

Hi Rim,

I am using the latest iOS version 6.1.3, and Auria 1.091.
It looks like it works fine at 44.1 khz, however as soon as I switch to a 48 khz project Jam starts blinking blue and green and the app crashes. I tested Jam with another app (white recorder) at 48 khz, 24 bits, and it recorded fine.
I also tested recording with Apogee Mic at 48 khz and it worked fine.
So it seems like something goes wrong with the Apogee Jam guitar-level output at 48 khz .
Any other ideas?

Thanks,

Zahari

Thanks, I'll try this here with a Jam, and see if I can replicate the problem.

OK, I tried to duplicate this, and I don't see any issues except the coreAudio bus, which requires that you always plug headphones in before you plug in a device. If I don't do this, it crashes, but this is expected.

Here's what I did to prevent it from crashing:

1. Make sure Auria is closed by double tapping on the home button
2. Make sure the Jam and the headphones are unplugged
3. Start Auria
4. Plug in the Headphones. Wait a few seconds.
5. Plug in the Jam.

After I did this, I waited for the USB indicator to come on, and then record enabled track 1. I had no issues.

Please let me know if this works for you, and if not, what you did differently.

Note: you won't see this problem in most other apps, because Auria uses the new Apple MultiRoute category, and coreAudio has a bug that causes this to happen when using it.

Rim,

I did the exact sequence of steps you described and as soon as I plug in the Jam Auria crashes and closes. The "usb" indicator does not come up. However, it works fine at 44.1khz??
Here are the steps I took to confirm:
1. Unplugged everything.
2. Closed Auria by double tapping on the home button.
3. Started a 48 khz project with 2 audio tracks in Auria
4. Plugged in the headphones. (Playback and everything else works fine)
5. Plugged in Jam and the app crashed before the indicator changes to usb

Then:
1. Unplugged Jam
2. Started a 44.1 khz project with 2 audio tracks in Auria
3. Plugged in Jam and everything worked fine

Did you test at 48 khz?

Thanks,

Zahari

This isn't happening here, and I am trying this on a 48K project like yours. I'm testing on an iPad 4. What model are you using?

I am using iPad Mini 64 gb. I will test on my old iPad 1st gen to see if it is happening there.

So I tested on iPad 1st gen running iOS 5.1.1 and exactly the same thing occurs there. As soon as I plug in the Jam while running a 48 khz project Auria closes. 44.1 khz works fine. When I get a chance I will test a hi-z input via my RME UFX to see if this is Jam-specific.

I just tested recording a single electric guitar track at 48 khz via UFX and it worked fine. So it looks like the issue for me is recording at 48 khz with Apogee Jam. I am stumped...
Let me know if you have any ideas.

Zahari

It doesn't have any issues for me on an iPad 4. I'll try it tomorrow on a mini and see if I can duplicate this.

Rim,

Did you get a chance to test on iPad mini?

I just tested on an iPad mini, using iOS 6.1.3, and it doesn't crash for me. I'm using Auria 1.10 however, so it's possible something was fixed that caused this to happen as a side-effect. Please let me know if it still happens once Auria 1.10 is out, and if it does, we can investigate further.

Thanks,
Rim
