Final File Sizes

Post by drock » Fri Nov 09, 2012 12:22 pm

Hey there. So I'm curious if anyone has done any full band recordings (8 track drums, bass, guitars, vocals, keys, etc), say, maybe 24-32 tracks in 96K. What has been your average file size on your final mix down? Are we talking 200-300mb? or 7-8gb or more per song? Because this obviously poses a problem when trying to sync final mixes to Dropbox.

Also, do any of you use the iTunes file transfer? Does iTunes automatically turn it into a AAC or keep it as a WAV?

Thanks for everyones help in advance!

The math is pretty simple - for 24 tracks and 4 minutes: 24 (channels) x 4 (minutes) x 60 (seconds) x 96 x 1024 (kHz) x 2 (16 bit) / 1024 (kbyte) / 1024 (mbyte) / 1024 (gbyte) = 1.0546875 GB :)

As for the format, iTunes transfer is just giving you access to the Auria sandbox, so there's no file conversion happening. You can get the full files from there in Wav, along with the entire project. If you do this on a Mac, the project shows up as a bundle, which is just a special kind of folder. To get to the wav files inside, just right click on the .project file and choose "Show Package Contents".
